Movies 4.0: 2023 Reviews

Back at it again with movies. Keeping up with the trend of binging entire franchises, this year’s movie list gets a tad bit longer. As usual, the format is as follows:

[Movie Title] – [Rating]
[brief, if any, comments]

Every Movie I’ve Watched in 2023

Midsommar – 3/10
A friend made me watch this with them and I am truly disturbed. If you’re into Horror, the rating may differ.

Friends with Benefits – 5/10
It was aight, it’s a decent watch if you have nothing better to watch.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days – 5/10
I randomly came across a few of my residents that had not yet headed home after their finals for the Spring 2023 semester and watched it with them. It was surprisingly decent.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – 8/10
I’m a big fan of the CGI and the movie was pretty well-done. Disney has issues with over-milking their IP, but I was excited for this movie and it did not disappoint.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre – 7/10
Pretty enjoyable movie.

The Fast and the Furious – 6/10
A summer release of Fast X meant I had to finally commit to watching this franchise in its entirety to prepare.

2 Fast 2 Furious – 6/10

Fast & Furious – 6/10

Fast Five – 7/10
The heist and the way the plan was revealed throughout the chase was cool.

Fast & Furious 6 – 7/10

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift – 4/10
I love the Tokyo racing aesthetic and I had the theme song stuck in my head for a hot minute. I was not a fan of the protagonist and the story that surrounded him, but all the supporting components were solid. Gotta love Han.

Furious 7 – 6/10

The Fate of the Furious – 6/10

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw – 7/10

F9: The Fast Saga – 8/10
Han is back.

Fast X – 7/10

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One – 4/10
I think it’s kind of dumb to have a full-length movie just be “part one.”

Overdrive – 6/10
Another car-chase heist type movie for the phase I was in.

Ghosted – 7/10
I watched the Wired Autocomplete Interview with Chris Evans and Ana de Armas promoting their movie, and I heard good things about it from some friends, so I decided to give it a try. It’s relatively cheesy and an interesting experience watching Chris Evans in a spy movie where he’s the incompetent one.

Atomic Blonde – 4/10
I honestly fast-forwarded through parts of this movie because it was uninteresting at parts.

Stephen Curry: Underrated – 7/10
The GOAT.

Rise – 5/10
Not too bad, as far as Disney goes in documenting Giannis’s life.

Joyride – 3/10
For all the promos I came across prior to the movie and a decent cast, the movie was pretty underwhelming.

Bullet Train – 6/10
Pretty funny in the drama.

Uncharted– 8/10
I never got around to watching it until this year, but Tom Holland is an A-lister for a reason.

No Hard Feelings – 5/10
Relatively amusing at points, and interesting to see Jennifer Lawrence take a role she isn’t usually known for.

The 355 – 4/10

Heart of Stone – 6/10
A pretty good movie, and I always love a card-themed spy movie.

Puppy Love – 8/10
I am a fan. Although not necessarily the most unique storyline in the genre at a surface level, it does a great job differentiating itself in the little moments.

Love in Taipei – 4/10
The trailer was better than the movie.

The List – 5/10

Love Again – 6/10
A really interest story and somehow Celine Dion finds herself in it too.

Meg 2: The Trench – 4/10
An alright, but overdone type of movie that’s just grubbing for box office.

The Meg – 4/10
Just the usual movie where you know most of the team will die, and it happens so often you get desensitized and the movie becomes about placing bets on who the next person to get almost-comically brutally killed is.

John Wick – 8/10
Another franchise where I finally committed to watching the entirety to get with the pop culture.

John Wick: Chapter 2 – 8/10

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum – 8/10

John Wick: Chapter 4 – 8/10

Rounders – 7/10
I was in a poker phase so I watched this oldie. Solid (lesser known?) classic with Matt Damon.

Now You See Me – 8/10
Continuing with my card-y phase, I rewatched the Now You See Me movies.

Now You See Me 2 – 6/10
The beginning and overall story wasn’t as interesting, but the actual heist was done really well. I am eagerly awaiting the sequel.

Strays – 4/10
The concept of the movie was interesting, but it didn’t live up to its true potential.

Mission: Impossible – 4/10
Back on my binge-rewatching streak, I tried binging all of the Mission: Impossible movies, but got bored and gave up. Rewatching these movies was less enjoyable than I remembered.

Mission: Impossible 2 – 4/10

Mission: Impossible III – 4/10

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol – 6/10

Gran Turismo – 7/10
The esports-turned-pro-racer story is relatively new, and this was a great venture into exploring the new career progression in the face of adversity and derision.
